Materials and Methods Extraction of alkaloids
Coarsely powdered seeds were defatted and the dried defatted marc was extracted in Soxhlet extractor with ethanol (95%). The ethanolic extract was
acidified with 2% HCl and extracted with several quantities of petroleum ether. To the acidic portion dilute solution of ammonia was added until it was slightly alkaline to litmus and non-alkaloidal precipitate was
filtered off. The pH of solution was brought to 9.5 by addition of ammonia. It was then extracted with successive quantities of chloroform. Thin layer chromatography of alkaloid mixture on silica gel G indicated
five alkaloidal bases (Solvent system : n-butanol - acetic acid-water (4:1:1) and chloroform - methanol (1:1)
